The Vokey SM9 wedges actually gave me LESS spin than the well-used Ping Glide 2.0 wedges (not worn-out or smooth on the faces, but played a good 40-50 rounds, I would estimate) and LESS spin than the first-generation Edison wedges, which had been in my bag for close to as many rounds as the Pings. my Ping Glide 2.0 wedges, which I consider to be pretty-much insignificant). The SM4 wedges gave me a bit more spin than any of the others (about 200-300 RPM on full shots and less than 200 RPM on partial shots vs. I now have the Edison 2.0 wedges in 48*, 53* and 58* lofts, but didn't have them when I did this wedge comparison/test in August. my Ping Glide 2.0 (54.12 and 58.10) wedges, as well as two of my first-generation Edison wedges (54* and 59* lofts). I have tested the TM MG4 and Vokey SM9 wedges vs. Honestly, it felt like it would take the cover off of any ball pretty quickly.ĭoes anyone game the MG4s or has anyone tested them versus SM9s or another competitors wedges? Or even the previous model, MG3s? ![]() I had an opportunity to see and feel MG4s in person recently and it is pretty interesting how rough(?) (not sure how to describe the face) the face of them felt with the newly marketed "Spin Tread". I personally own a set of SM9s but the new tech in the MG4 face has me pretty curious about them. So, I was wondering what everyone has thought of the MG4s vs the SM9s. I noticed in the wedge guide for 2023 that the SM9 was not in the consideration since it was previously covered and the guides only cover new/unreviewed products. That would almost kill the trade-in/buying used market for these clubs as well I would think. Please update over time if you do think the spin tread wears off quite fast. It is something different and new that is tangible. I've only felt the spin tread with my hands and not with a swing/ball and you are right about it feeling like sandpaper. Interesting and that actually makes a lot of sense. I'll be paying attention as I use them but I'm betting the best performance is going to be for guys on tour who get new wedges every tournament and the new tech isn't going to be a big deal for the average golfer who keeps wedges for a season or 2 or 5. That said, I think once these micro grooves wear down the club will be the same as a Vokey or similar that don't have much in the way of micro grooves for wet performance so it's not really a total loss. I'm not sure how deep they really need to be to do their job in the wet so maybe it's not a big deal, but from a looks and feel perspective they wear down to being much smoother than they are out of the package after only a few rounds. I do have concerns though about the durability of the spin tread seems like they really do show wear extremely fast. I guess my opinion differs from the above but I would say that it is extremely noticeable. I'm more curious if it is actually something that shows a benefit in play. As of now, the MG4 is still in the bag.ĭo you think that new "Spin Tread" tech is noticeable? I mean to the actual, physical touch it is very different than other wedges. I do not like Lamkin grips and favor GP Tour 360, but the grip is really nice and have not changed.Ĭompared to a Vokey (long time user), I would say the Vokey groove last longer and the heads are slightly harder feeling than the MG4. The one surprising thing about the wedge is the Lamkin grip. Not a bad thing to have the grooves wear down a bit and would have loved if they stayed longer. Slowly they started to wear more and more and I have attached the picture of the face after 10 rounds. After about 4 rounds (only 2 bunker shots) I started to notice the angled grooves started to disapear below the first groove. ![]() ![]() Spin is tremondous, even in wet conditions (play in GA at 7:30 am and there is alway dew) to a point that you need to plan on hit and stop even from short chips. There is nothing like pulling off the plastic protection off a new wedge! Straight out the grooves are the roughest surface I have ever felt on a club. I bought the MG4 when it came out and have some mix feelings.
